Salcombe: Enjoy a romantic holiday break in sailing paradise

If you don’t want all the hassle of an airport journey or a break in a busy city, why not jump in the car or on to the train and head west to Salcombe in South Devon. It may be best known as one of the most popular sailing resorts in England but it is a delightful spot in its own right and the perfect setting for a romantic getaway. Even out of season, the area is so mild that you will actually see palm trees growing!

The cliff top walks around the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary offer stunning views of the shimmering sea below and the yachts that glide serenely across it. At the end of the day, one can look forward to a sumptuous meal in one of the town’s superb range of waterside eateries. Why not treat your loved one to a Lobster Thermidor served with chips and a glass of chilled champagne at Jack & Will’s bustling brasserie? Alternatively, how about a sizzling Westcountry fillet steak at the Galley Restaurant? Just make sure that you leave enough room for the white chocolate panna cotta!

If the weather forecast is half reasonable, plan a walk along part of the famous South West Coast Path to nearby Hope Cove. Stock up first with a fine picnic lunch from the Salcombe Yawl deli. You should also set aside time for a visit to the National Trust property at Overbecks near the tip of the estuary. Here you will find amazing sub-tropical gardens and a museum dedicated to the house’s original owner, the eccentric Edwardian scientist, Otto Overbeck. The views back down towards the town are simply magnificent.

Because of its popularity with the sailing fraternity, Salcombe has an abundance of eye-catching shops and, if your credit card is still up to it, cut your other half loose so she can explore all the stylish clothes shops like Joules, Seasalt, Crew Clothing and Amelia’s Attic.

The town is well geared up for visitors as it has to cope with the annual invasion of “ yachties” during the season so you will have no problem finding superb Salcombe holiday home accommodation in one of the many self-catering holiday cottages and apartments in Salcombe which are available to rent. To make your romantic break complete, you could perhaps choose one with a roaring open fire or a jacuzzi. Either way, you will have little difficulty in finding one with a delightful sea view – an absolute joy to wake up to in the morning. With everything from the ultra-modern to shabby chic cottages, this is a resort which has a romantic hideaway to suit every taste.
